Vocus and Nextgen partner to invest in subsea cable
Posted on November 16, 2015
We're proud to announce we've partnered with Nextgen to increase the capacity of the submarine cable between Australia and Singapore tenfold. The $170 million joint venture is due to start in early 2016 and will take approximately eighteen months to complete.
The new 4600km cable will solve major disruptions to internet speeds caused by recent cuts in the ageing existing cable between the two countries. Undersea cables, laid on the bottom of the ocean floor, transport nearly 100% of transoceanic data traffic and this project will increase existing capacity tenfold.
The partnership will not only enable a faster connection, but will facilitate access to overseas websites and allow Australians to make international calls with ease.
Nationally, the project will also add value to available telecommunications infrastructure and provide subsea cable diversity for governments and businesses around the country.
We continue to grow in size and capability, and the announcement of this partnership follows approval from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) for the proposed acquisition of M2 Group.
With the merger with M2, we will become the fourth-largest integrated telco in Australia and the third-largest in New Zealand, with a combined market value of more than $3 billion.
As we continue to grow and make marks in the telecommunications industry, it is our goal to keep enabling other businesses to grow too.
