Vocus People
From classroom to command centre
Fresh from completing his Network Engineering degree at RMIT, Roghin was eager to gain real world exposure, and that he certainly did, working across Vocus' entire network and facilities that power the network. Now, five years later, he leads the very team he once joined as a graduate.
From classroom to command centre
Roghin was a passionate student at RMIT University with his sights set on a career far from average. After completing his degree in November 2019, he kick-started his career with Vocus that December as an Operations Command Centre (OCC) Engineer - Graduate.
From submarines to submarine cables
"I have always had a love for submarines. Knowing that I would work with Australia's submarine cable networks meant Vocus was a clear winner for me. The wide array of networking aspects involved, paired with Vocus' reputation for being a leading specialist in fibre and network solutions secured my decision."
His role as a graduate encompasses diverse responsibilities across Vocus' network infrastructure, involving critical monitoring of key customers, international IP traffic, cloud and fibre optic transmission and maintaining submarine cable systems including the 4,600km system linking Australia to Singapore and the 2,100km North West Cable System between Port Hedland and Darwin.
Rising through the ranks
Roghin's career progression has been remarkable. He was promoted to Tier 2 Engineer and in 2022 became Operations Command Centre Team Leader. His leadership has been tested during major network incidents, where his calm approach and technical expertise has proven invaluable.
"I've managed numerous submarine cable cuts over the years, including the complicated outage on 19th January 2025 that impacted multiple submarine cable systems," he explains. "Through detailed planning and team contribution across Vocus, we restored normal operations earlier than expected, overcoming weather complications and environmental factors."
One memorable incident involved a break-in at a Vocus CEV site. "I spotted the unauthorised break-in through vigilant monitoring and scared off the intruders through remote communications, stopping them in their tracks with no impact to customers."
Leading and mentoring the next generation
Today, as Team Leader, Roghin has developed strong leadership and management skills, fostering a high-performance team while maintaining calm under pressure during major incidents. He regularly trains and mentors new starters in the OCC, from senior engineers to graduate engineers.
Recent recognition through Vocus' Shine reward and recognition program highlighted his dedication to upskilling his team, ensuring they can operate smoothly even in his absence. Roghin has developed diverse skills across all of Vocus' networks and facilities, including IP, fibre optics, transmission, submarine cables, and electrical systems.
Personal growth and future aspirations
Beyond professional achievements, Roghin recently got married and continues balancing his demanding role with personal life while maintaining his passion for telecommunications.
His advice for networking graduates is: "Embrace learning with passion. Networking is a huge field with abundant learnings. Be open to building diverse skills to take on any networking challenge. Working at Vocus has enabled me to learn so much and I'm excited to continue growing my career here."
For Roghin, Vocus has provided not just a career but a pathway to leadership, offering opportunities to grow from graduate to team leader while working on Australia's most critical network infrastructure.
