Taking iconic Australian brands into their next chapter, one story at a time.

When Dave Albon joined Vocus as Digital Content Manager seven years ago, he was looking for a role where he could grow and make a real impact. Originally from the UK and having moved to Australia 12 years ago, he was drawn to Vocus for its potential and the opportunity to be part of the Consumer team — it meant working hands-on with iconic Australian brands like Dodo and iPrimus as they continued to evolve within the industry.

“I joined Vocus because the scope for growth felt huge,” Dave says. “These are brands with more than 25 years of legacy, and the chance to help take them to the next chapter was really exciting.”

Growing with Vocus

Since then, Dave’s career has evolved steadily, shaped by Vocus’ willingness to back ambition, invest in capability and give people the space to grow. Starting out, he focused on creative-led digital advertising, website content and search engine optimisation. Over time, his remit expanded alongside his skill set.

“After a few years, I moved into a newly created Digital Marketing and Sales Manager role, which was all about guiding customers through their end‑to‑end journey from first seeing an ad, through to the website and ultimately making a purchase,” he explains.

That role laid the foundation for his next step as Integrated Marketing Manager, where Dave began overseeing both digital and traditional channels. The focus shifted from individual tactics to delivering cohesive, connected campaigns across every touchpoint.

Stepping into leadership

Today, as Head of Brand and Integrated Marketing, Dave leads a diverse team of designers and campaign managers, delivering large‑scale, high‑impact campaigns for Vocus’ Consumer brands.

“My current role is the biggest challenge of my career so far and the most rewarding,” he says. “Being trusted to lead such a talented team has been incredibly motivating, both professionally and personally.”

What keeps it interesting

For Dave, development at Vocus has never been about rigid career paths. Instead, it has been about being trusted to step into new challenges and shape his own progression.

“One of the things I’ve always loved about Vocus is the trust and freedom to act on ideas that genuinely help our customers,” Dave says. “If you see an opportunity to improve the customer experience, you’re encouraged and supported by leaders to take it forward. That level of ownership pushes you to grow, and success naturally follows.”

That trust has enabled Dave to step into increasingly complex work, including leading large-scale brand guideline updates that require alignment across multiple teams and functions.

“More complex projects can be challenging because they impact so many people and ways of working,” he explains. “But that’s also what makes them rewarding. You learn a lot by listening to different perspectives and understanding how decisions shape people’s day-to-day work.”

Variety is what makes Dave’s role truly unique. From refining brand guidelines and navigating regulatory requirements, to being on set for TV commercials or working with major sporting partnerships, no two days look the same.

“That breadth is what keeps me energised,” he says. “The scale and diversity of the work is something you don’t get everywhere.”

Dave credits Vocus’ culture, particularly its ambition and flexibility as a major reason he’s stayed and grown with the business.

“If something isn’t working, we talk about it and we fix it,” he says. “There’s a genuine openness to change, as long as it benefits our customers. That’s powerful.”

Looking ahead, Dave is excited by how innovation, particularly AI continues to reshape the marketing landscape, changing how creative work is produced and delivered. Through it all, his focus remains on building strong brands and great customer experiences.

Reflecting on his own journey, Dave is clear on what he would tell someone just starting out at Vocus.

“Learn broadly, but don’t let complexity slow you down,” he says. “Focus on one thing at a time, do it well, then move on to the next. Your focus will shift as you grow and that’s exactly how it should be.”

Dave’s journey is a clear example of how Vocus supports people to build skills, take on new challenges and shape meaningful, long‑term careers.
