    Roy Chan

Head of Finance Data Analytics, Vocus

How Roy Chan’s career has grown through data, finance and transformation

After graduating from the University of Melbourne with a Bachelor of Commerce, majoring in Accounting and Finance with a minor in Psychology, Roy Chan began his career working on transformation projects at IBM and Medibank.

Drawn by the opportunity to lead a team and broaden his skillset, Roy joined Vocus as a Financial Controller within the Vocus Consumer business in 2017. He quickly took on greater responsibilities, eventually overseeing the finance functions across both the Technology and Corporate sides of the business.

Taking on new challenges across six roles

During his time at Vocus, Roy has held six roles across both the Consumer and Networks businesses, transitioning from financial control to data analytics.

Today, as Head of Finance Data Analytics, Roy leads a team that uses data-driven insights to improve decision-making and financial performance across the organisation. For Roy, the future of finance is about giving teams access to clean, connected data so they can make informed decisions quickly through self-service analytics and real-time insights.

Roy credits his diverse career path at Vocus to the support he has received from his people leaders, and the culture Vocus fosters around continuous learning and development.

    Building leadership through transformation

Roy’s leadership skills were put to the test during the two long COVID-19 Melbourne lockdowns, where he remotely managed a large team across Australia and Manila. “It was a really testing time, not just operationally, but emotionally,” he says. “It taught me a lot about communication, empathy and adaptability.”

Another career-defining experience was his involvement in a whole-of-business transformation program - a nearly two-year initiative that brought significant system upgrades and introduced a new operating model. As a stream lead and change champion, Roy played a key role in shaping how teams would work in the future, designing processes and solutions that improved collaboration and delivery. “At the time, working on this project was a huge learning curve, but it’s incredibly rewarding to see our work still being used and built on today.”

    A culture that supports growth

Reflecting on his 8 years at Vocus, Roy says what stands out most is Vocus’ willingness to back its people and support them in their career development and personal growth.

“When I joined the business, I had never managed a team before. Vocus saw my potential and gave me the opportunity to grow into a people management role. That kind of trust really motivates you to step up.”

He also values the collaborative culture across teams. “There’s a strong learning culture here. People genuinely want to help you succeed, and that makes it easy to pick up new skills and stretch into new areas.”

Roy’s advice to anyone interested in joining Vocus? “Be curious. Ask questions. Try new things. And don’t worry if you don’t tick every box. Vocus is the kind of place that will give you the chance to learn and grow.”
