Setting the Course: Our pathway to Net Zero

In 2022 we announced our target to achieve net zero emissions across our operations (scope 1+2) by the end of calendar year 2025 (mid-FY26). Since then, we have been working to reduce our underlying scope 2 emissions by consolidating our data centre footprint and pursuing energy efficiency and abatement opportunities right across our business.

We have implemented efficiency measures that reduced emissions within our data centres by 18.3% throughout FY23-24, exceeding our FY23-25 reduction goal of 15%. By the end of FY24 we had also reduced our overall scope 1+2 emissions by 38.7%, from an FY19 baseline. Behind the scenes we have also been working to assess and mitigate our climate risks and quantify our scope 3 emissions.

    New opportunities and strategies

Since setting our climate targets we have also pursued our growth ambitions, and in October 2024 we entered into a binding agreement to acquire TPG’s enterprise, government and wholesale fixed business and fibre network assets. This transaction will double the size of our business and is expected to complete this calendar year (subject to regulatory approvals), ahead of our current net zero (scope 1+2) target date. While this represents enormous opportunities for our business, it will materially change the scope of our operations, and therefore our carbon emissions footprint and boundary - meaning we will no longer be in a position to achieve this target. Moving forward, our immediate focus will be on integrating our new assets, so that we can re-baseline and reset our climate targets for the merged entity in accordance with best practice guidance outlined within the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol and SBTi standards.

    Commitment to a sustainable future

We are committed to achieving net zero emissions and maintaining momentum towards this goal. Immediately upon completion, we will start identifying and quantifying decarbonisation opportunities across our expanded emissions footprint, so we can set a new scope 1, 2 and 3 net zero target by the end of FY26. When reviewing our net zero pathway, we will focus on maximising direct emissions reductions as our top priority. We are also looking forward to considering any additional abatement opportunities that may be available to us as a larger business.

We will continue to keep our stakeholders informed of our progress, including providing more details on our revised target and how we plan to achieve it, in 2026.
