If you search on Google for "digital transformation for Australian businesses", you will get 12.5 million results. I think we can all agree there has been enough discussions around digital transformation and why it should be at the top of every businesses’ agenda. But the reality is many businesses, especially mid-sized companies are still struggling to understand what they need to do to achieve this.

We interviewed C-level executives and IT managers across Australia to gain an insight into where they were at on their digital transformation journeys. We wanted to understand what their strategic priorities were when it came to the execution of digital transformation and in this process, learnt more about their pain points, motivations and aspirations.

Unanimously, people surveyed called out the performance of a company’s network infrastructure as being crucial as it supports the increasing flows of data generated within businesses and increasingly through remote sensors and devices connected to the Internet of Things (IoT).

One in four (26 percent) IT managers in mid-sized organisations have identified the lack of data integration and how it is impacting on customer analytics. With IoT, the amount of unstructured data that needs to be stored and managed from devices and remote sensors will only increase. While these large pools of data can support the C-suite in making decisions strategically through data analytics, more than half of IT managers surveyed think the biggest challenge in the next three years will be getting their network IoT ready for the data deluge.

The network is the foundation for digital transformation as it brings agility to decision making, connects customers closer to businesses and increases innovation through collaboration. Yet only one in three (36 percent) of IT managers interviewed from mid to large-sized businesses plan to change or upgrade their network connectivity in the next 12 months.
