80 percent of medium-sized businesses were not planning to invest in a fibre network in the next two years even though they would achieve the most benefits from having a high-speed network.
Businesses only realise how important a network is as everything grinds to a halt when the office or mobile network fails. The chaos that ensues when the network stops working shows how a modern and high performing network is the lifeblood of all businesses. But the invisibility of a network often means it is taken for granted by business leaders until the shit hits the fan.
A high-speed network harmonises core business technologies such as the Applications stack, unified communications, cloud computing and big data analytics. But with emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things (IoT), a high-speed fibre network is crucial to support the transmission of data over the network in real-time.
If the network is a lifeblood of businesses to deliver innovation and digital transformation, why are only half of Australia’s largest businesses planning to invest in a fibre network in the next two years instead of now? We wanted to understand how Australian C-level executives and IT managers were planning for their networks in the future and the findings in our research caught us by surprise.
80 percent of medium-sized businesses were not planning to invest in a fibre network in the next two years even though they would achieve the most benefits from having a high-speed network. An overwhelming majority (88 percent) felt changing their businesses’ network connectivity was just too hard, or its impact on their organisation was too difficult to justify.
What do businesses need to consider if they are to build a network for the future?
- Go out to market and review annual IT budgets and reflect on how an investment now would help their businesses achieve greater productivity and innovation instead of making incremental investments.
- Prioritise which current and emerging technologies are important and match their investments to business requirements be it data, network connectivity or cloud computing.
- Recognise that not all of the data within the network needs the same treatment and hybrid networks can be more cost effective than a full Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) network.
The opportunities for businesses are there if they can create a high performance core.
