Vocus Harbour Crossing

Vocus Communications Limited (ASX:VOC), has revealed the next step in its Dark Fibre strategy by laying the first dark fibre links directly across the Sydney Harbour floor.

In an unprecedented move, Vocus has laid two pipes: the first from Dawes Point to Blues Point and the second, from Dawes Point to Milsons Point.

The dark fibre cables provide the shortest possible path from Sydney's CBD to the new Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) co-location data centre in Gore Hill.

"This provides the fastest, most reliable data service from the city to the ASX facility. Improved performance and reduced latency will deliver a far superior service between the two locations," explained James Spenceley, Vocus CEO.

But the solution didn't come easy. The strict guidelines of Sydney Harbour meant the project took over seven months of intense planning.

"It was hard work," admits Spenceley.

"But the Vocus philosophy has always been to take a fresh look at the scenario and do things the best way,

not the easiest way," he added.

Although other providers offer links between the two locations, Spenceley believes the more obvious bridge/tunnel solution leaves communications services vulnerable.

The harbour floor dark fibre pipes are further strategic step in Vocus' plans to become a leading infrastructure provider to the telco, cloud computing and retail ISP markets.
