Beating the Traffic

Blurry Traffic

It's Friday night of the long weekend, you leave work at 5:30 on the dot, rush home, and pack your kids and bags into the car. It takes about five minutes before you hit the 6:30pm gridlock.

Not only is the narrow road one of the most driven routes in the area but there's been an accident on the adjacent street and traffic is streaming into every junction possible. No one is going anywhere.

Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks are the traffic jam of the network. Except instead of being caught in peak hour, imagine someone has organised for all their friends to flood the roads at the one time.

In the case of a DDoS attack, this virtual traffic comes at the network from thousands of unique computer IPs aiming to make a machine or network resource unavailable to intended users.

The worst part? DDoS attacks are just as inevitable as peak hour traffic.

As 2014 saw a massive 121 per cent increase in infrastructure based DDoS attacks[1], Australia is under increasing targeted and prevalent risk of DDoS attacks. Any organisation with a public IP address is vulnerable to a DDoS attack that can severely damage their operations and reputation.

DDoS adversely affects the operation of a business by slowing network performance, preventing access to websites, increasing spam and disconnecting internet connection. Adding insult to injury, when a business suffers from a DDoS attack it creates the perception the company has flaws in the way it handles sensitive data.

Whilst the bad news is that DDoS attacks are unavoidable -- the good news is there's something you can do about it.

We have announced the launch of a new form of protection against Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks, DDoS Protect.

The DDoS Protect solution offers a premium level of protection against attacks by focusing on providing automatic detection and mitigation before attacks occur, while also allowing customers to stay online, even when an incident has taken place. DDoS Protect provide automatic DDoS scrubbing of all detectable events, customer initiated (manual) scrubbing via Border Gateway Protocol during an attack, as well as customisable reports on DDoS history and impact available on request.

Our 24/7 Network Operations Centre team also offers one of the best DDoS defence systems of any telco in the country. Through two teams, the Threat Detection System team (TDS) and the Threat Prevention System team (TPS), which include highly trained network engineers, we constantly gather intelligence to identify new signatures, predict new forms of attack and fine tune filters to look out for suspicious traffic.

Think of DDoS Protect as your own personal police convoy. Instead of getting stuck in traffic on a Friday night you can drive straight through.
